Diabetes is one of the most common problems worldwide caused by multiple etiologies. The disease is mainly characterized hyperglycemia which is either due to defective insulin secretion (Type 1) or its action (Type 2) or both. It is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity over the world. The prevalence of diabetes has increased rapidly during the last few decades resulting in a worldwide epidemic.

A study conducted from 1980 to 2010 in US population shows that number of diabetic patients increased from 5.6 million to 20.9 million representing 2.5% and 6.9% of the population. The problem has been aggravated by urbanization, dietary changes, lesser physical activity and maintaining an unhealthy lifestyle and behavioral patterns. All these factors lead to increasing level of obesity raising the risk of diabetes beyond projected rate. According to WHO, it is the 7th leading cause of death in 2030 and majority of the deaths due to diabetes are in developing and underdeveloped nations. It has been found that about 171 million people across the world are suffering from diabetes and the number is expected to become double by 2030. It is putting a heavy burden on the economy of every nation as the government has to spend a lot on providing the healthcare services. The cost of treating diabetes has gone up during the last few years due to its increased prevalence. As diabetes has many complication, so prices of treatment has soared up. The substantial cost of diabetes to both society and citizen are in terms of direct costs include the treatment charges and indirect cost like lost productivity because of diabetes related morbidity and premature mortality. Expenditure on diabetes can even higher in the future if it is not well managed. A number of approaches has been put forward like Global Diabetes plan in 2011 which create awareness among the people for self care management for diabetes.

Diabetes has becoming a serious concern all over the world due to its consequences. The problem becomes more in developing countries due to lack of infrastructure, well qualified healthcare providers and lack of resources. Every nation is suffering from the impact of diabetes. In order to combat this problem, it is the high time to change the lifestyle by bringing healthy food and increased physical activity in our daily routine.
